Dear Friends and Neighbours,
I want to assure all Canadians that recently signed agreements between the Musqueam Indian Band and the Government of Canada do not infringe on private property rights and will not alter ownership of privately held land.
These agreements recognize Musqueam’s, constitutionally protected, Aboriginal rights in the specific areas of fisheries, stewardship, and marine emergency management, while establishing a clear framework for collaboration between the First Nation and Canada.
For decades, Canadian courts have affirmed that governments have a duty to consult and negotiate with Indigenous people in good faith. They have consistently encouraged negotiated solutions rather than prolonged litigation.
The vast majority of the Province of British Columbia was never settled via treaties between First Nations and the Crown. Agreements like these provide greater clarity and stability for everyone. They support constructive partnerships, prevents lengthy and unpredictable litigation, and help ensure we can move forward in a way that protects property, and the interests of all Canadians.
Canada is committed to maintaining legal clarity and the stability of private property ownership. Claims that these agreements alter private property ownership are misinformation.
